Following the success of the Motorbike Raffle in 2007, The Club decided to try this effective means of fundraising again in the Rotary Year 2010/2011. But learning from the earlier event, it was decided to allow more time to sell tickets, with the target being all 1,000 tickets sold. Accordingly, PP Adele Smith and Rotarian Nicolas Emmert visited the Yamaha outlet in Nathon where the first motorbike had been purchased and negotiated a good price for a Yamaha Fino in smart lime green and black. The owner of the outlet also agreed to buy 20 tickets on behalf of his staff!
The raffle officially started on 1st September 2010, and the draw was scheduled to take place on 26th November 2010 at Anantara Resort and Spa, where a Fellowship Dinner was due to take place. Ticket sales were lively, with many ‘Friends of Rotary’ offering to help. Also, Samui Shamrock in Lamai agreed to sell tickets on the club’s behalf, and was very successful. The final few tickets were sold on the night of the draw, many going to Anantara staff, including the chef! The winning ticket was drawn by one of the guests and the lucky winner, Sabrina Grimwood, was in England at the time! It is worthy of note that Sabrina was the first to buy her tickets, 16 in all! President Peter Breaks rang her to inform her of her lucky win. Sabrina asked a member of her staff in Chaweng to collect the motorbike on her behalf.
Though the club had to buy the motorbike without sponsorship help, selling all 1,000 tickets meant that 50,000 baht profit went to Project Funds for the year to purchase a ‘Jaws of Life’ for Samui Rescue.
