History of Rocks
It seems it was only yesterday that the Rotary Club of Koh Samui was born. Yes, ROCKS, a rather appropriate acronym for a club based on a rocky island, was chartered on 22 January 2003. Despite its relatively short life, ROCKS has shown it has started on a strong and firm footing. ROCKS' mission is to consolidate the club with strong fellowship and understanding of Rotary and to concentrate our activities on the island community and the environment, but with a look outside our island when need arises. We have so far achieved this and more.
The members have certainly lived up to the Rotary Motto, 'Service Above Self', and have devoted their time, effort and money to build up the club. We have received and welcome scores of visitors to our club, both Rotarians and non Rotarians. Our members have looked beyond Samui and extended their Rotary experience by participating in District Conferences not only in Thailand but also overseas and they have visited many Rotary clubs, both here in Thailand and abroad. The club has participated in the National Children's Days by providing food, ice cream and drinks for up to 5,000 children on the island. We have adopted three Temple Schools and raised new buildings, carried out renovations and provided computers.
We are especially proud of our response to the devastation caused by the tsunami that struck the west coast of Thailand on 26th December 2004. We raised 1.2 million Baht here in Koh Samui, and attracted funds totaling 8.5 million Baht from donors worldwide. These funds were spent helping to regenerate a community that had been destroyed on that terrible day.
We couldn't have achieved these special projects without the dedication of the members and the support from the community, especially financial support from individuals and the business community. Rotary thanks you. We as Rotarians will continue the theme of 'Lend a Hand' to further our mission, not only to serve our local community but also that of the international community.
